At Huston-Tillotson University, we've addressed the STEM diversity crisis by re-modeling our education strategies and our engagement with employers, community members, and fellow educators. Our students are the diverse pipeline society needs. Our interventions are built around their backgrounds and reflect their potential.

Objectives:
  • Discuss the state of diversity in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, which despite decades of interventions, remains woefully homogeneous.
  • Outline the need for diversity, honing in on the accelerating pace of health and environmental crises straining individuals, communities, and governments.
  • Analyze the limitations of past interventions, which often frame the lack of diverse candidates for STEM, research, environmental, and health careers as a “pipeline problem.
  • Discuss HT's approach to developing the next generation of STEM professionals while concurrently educating STEM employers, partners, and the broader community about the broader causes of inequality and outline how to apply these approaches at other organizations.
